The best way to make money, is to sell your art or craft pieces at your local farmer’s or crafts show, on Etsy and Amazon, or sell them at yard sale.

Etsy is the best platform for handmade items like jewelry, soap, clothing, crafts, cards, wooden products, arts & collectibles, paper, party supplies, toys and games, pottery.

Have you been thinking about turning your hobby into a source of income?  Are you ready to launch your business?

There are few things you need to note when turning your hobby into a source of income.

When you start selling a product or service, it becomes your business, whether full-time or part-time.   To make your business successful you need to:

#1: Treat it like a business

#2: Plan it

#3: Get all the legal stuff taken care of, like permits, license, etc.

#4: Invest in materials or equipment needed to do your work

#5: Be willing to put in extra hours of work

#6: Use a system or tool to manage your workload

#7: Be ready for some expenses (like paying for teaching or learning online classes, pay for ads)

#8: Set realistic goals

#9: Stay positive even when you’re not making money

#10: Most important, stay committed

The above list, is not to get you discouraged, but to better prepare you. Many times, people start all excited about turning their hobby into a source of income. They get their ideas together and are ready to go.  Once they start getting clients, they get stuck and quit.

Let’s look at each of the item listed above in more details:

#1: Treat It Like A Business

If you’re serious about making money and you want it to be successful, you must treat it like a business instead of just a hobby. You need to have a business mindset and put your best effort into your work.  The quality of your work will help your business grow.

#2: Plan It

Without a plan, most things fail and so does a business.  Who will be interested in your hobby?  Who are you going to sell your products or services to? How are you going to manage your clients, work and other business-related activities?

All these information needs to be captured in your business plan. A plan will help you follow through without getting stuck.  You will know what you need to do next and of course a backup plan is always helpful.

You also need to consider the right timing.  Are you ready to handle extra work and ready to pull off a transition from hobbyist to professional?

#3: Take Care of Legal Stuff

A business needs to operate legally, meaning with proper permits and licenses.  Check with your state, county and city and find out what permits or licenses you need to run your business.

Taking care of all legal necessities now, will save you from lot of headaches and fines.

#4: Be Prepared to Invest

Using photography as an example; to turn it into a profession, there are certain things you need to invest in, like a good quality camera, camera stand, a website or a blog, business cards, flyers.

For other professions, you may need to register with certain websites, like Hirewriters and Fiverr so that you can get your product or services in front of your potential clients.

When it comes to investing, you won’t be just investing money but time as well.

#5: Ready to Put in Extra Hours

Right now, you might be spending time doing what you love only during your free time or when you feel like.  Once it’s a profession, you will need to put in extra hours to meet the deadline and expectation.

You might need to make certain sacrifices, like instead of going out to movies, staying in and working on your project.

#6: Using Management Tools

Managing a business in an effective and efficient manner is essential for its success. Use tools like calendar or planner to plan or schedule your tasks.  Prioritize your tasks so you can take care of important things first.

#7: Expect Some Expenses

Depending on what your hobby is and how you’re planning to make money, there will be some expenses that you will need to take care of probably monthly or annually.  For example; some online teaching platforms charge fees, then there will be other expenses like advertisement, business licenses, and transaction fees.

#8: Set Realistic Goals

Don’t set your expectations too high.  By setting realistic goals, you will accomplish more, since those goals are more achievable then unrealistic ones.

Start small.  Don’t set too many goals and try to accomplish all at the same time.  Work on most important goals first.

#9: Be Positive

Many times, when things don’t go as hoped, we give up. You can’t start making money overnight.  Things take time.  Be patient and keep trying your best.

First few days, you might not make money but as people find out about your services or products, and look at your portfolio, you will start getting clients.

Sometimes once the hobby turns into a money-making profession, many people lose interest. They don’t enjoy it anymore, especially when they don’t have the bandwidth to accommodate the demand, or they just don’t want to deal with the expenses like website maintenance, paying for ads, investing into new equipment or supplies.

The best way to make the transition from a hobbyist to a professional, a successful one, is to do your research and get yourself better prepared.

#10: Stay Committed

This is similar to staying positive. You have to commit yourself to your business’s success. The more committed and dedicated you’re, the more you will achieve.

Yes, there will be times when you will feel overwhelmed, stressed, frustrated, not having enough time, but by staying positive, and managing your workload and time effectively, you will set yourself for success.

Nothing is impossible.  Success doesn’t happen overnight.  Focus on your goals and continue enjoying doing what you love doing.
