Working Moms: Tips for Carving Out “Free Time”

Who doesn’t like some free or spare time and when it comes to moms, free time is like a gift. They can spend that time to take care of themselves or do something that makes them feel great.

Working moms always end up with busy schedules, they not only have to take care of the family and personal life but also their professional responsibilities.  How moms manage their time is critical, especially if they want to create a balance between their work and family life.




Luckily, I’ve been able to manage my time more effectively, and have been able to balance out my work and family commitments. In the beginning, it was a little difficult and I always felt exhausted and unable to do things that I enjoy. After using few techniques and learning from other working moms, I was able to create “free time” and I was so happy that I did.

Having “me time” helped me do things that I didn’t have time for, complete projects that were left incomplete, participate in activities that helped me feel good and of course I got more time to focus on my health. 

By making good use of my free time, I felt so much better.  I felt more energetic, happier and healthier.  My days were running smoothly, my mornings were no longer crazy and chaotic, I didn’t have to keep looking at the clock every 5 minutes, I didn’t have to worry about kids being late to school…

“Free time” also gave me an opportunity to focus on things that mattered most to me and my family. It felt great!

Of course, working motherhood is not easy.  But once you start taking care of yourself, listen to your family members and start doing what you love to do, your days will run so much smoother and you’ll find yourself thriving and happier!

This article is a bit different from others where it reiterates the need of getting things-to-do list or setting schedules.  Don’t take me wrong, lists and schedules are helpful, but it didn’t do much for me until I exercised theses tips.




In this article, I’m going to share tips that did work for me.  These are simple yet effective ways to create some free time.

Before we look at these tips, you first need to examine and evaluate your current situation. To make the right move, you first need to know your present.  What are the things that have overwhelmed you? What are some of the things you wished were easier to manage. What’s important to you? 

By identifying these things, you’ll have a better understanding of where you stand and which of the following tips will work best for you. 

Let’s get started and look at few tips for Moms to create some free time.

First, Don’t Be Scared of Change

I’ve noticed many moms are afraid of change. Adopting new ways to do things is not a bad idea especially if it makes your life easier. And once you set your mind that you want a better life, you’ll find change is easy.

Sometimes it’s important to make a change for both your family’s and your own benefits.

 

Take Inventory

Take a close look at your daily, weekly and/or monthly tasks. How much time do you spend on them. The best way to take inventory of all the things that you have to do is to write them down. This will give you a clear picture of all the things you have to take care of. 

Writing down all the things you do will also help you realize that some of the things you are doing is not so important or it will help you find alternatives. You’ll be able to clearly articulate your values which will help you make choices that reflect those values. 

Once you have a clear understanding of your present and your core values, you’ll be able to move from living stretched too thin to thriving without difficulty.




Your values represent your guiding principles, and once you know what is most important to you, the path of your life becomes clearer and it is easier to set priorities.

 

Set Priorities

It’s very typical that we want to do it all because we are the moms and we end up feeling overtired, stressed and busy.  You can’t have everything, and you can’t do everything

It’s time to stop running so fast and get yourself into a slower and more peaceful life.  To set priorities you first need to know what’s important to you.  Family? Work? Friends? Business?

Then you need to look at all the tasks associated with these areas and prioritize by importance.  Are there tasks that don’t really add value and can be removed?

Rearranging tasks according to importance will help you feel much relieved.  Prioritizing doesn’t mean you ignore the least important tasks.  You can still tend to those, once you’ve handled the high priority ones.

 

Set Goals

We want to attend to every single thing or task that needs our attention at that moment, whether we have the energy or not.  We complete one task and then move on to the next.  So, the days are spent bouncing from one task to another. 

The best way to avoid feeling overwhelmed or tired is by spending time on things that truly matter to you. And this can be accomplished by setting goals.  Goals can help eliminate spending time on things that you don’t want to do.

By setting meaningful goals, you will increase clarity. You will make good choices for life and it will be easier for you to let go of things that are not tied to your goals.

 

Focus on Yourself

As a mother, we focus and give our attention to everything else before ourselves. Making yourself a priority is important to avoid feeling stressed, drained, overtired and way-too-busy.

By nourishing yourself, you become a better mom.  Taking time for yourself will allow you to focus on your priorities.  It will give your more strength and help you thrive. Motherhood is not about being in a constant state of feeling overwhelmed, spread thin and exhausted.

There are simply things you can do to take care of yourself like walking, taking a nap, exercising, journaling, meditating, reading, getting a massage, or playing relaxing music. Make a habit to commit to your health, physically and spiritually.  Do it for your family and for yourself.

 

Share the Load

Again, you cannot do everything without getting yourself overtired, or stressed.  Ask for help. Ask your family members to help you out with the chores.  If you have older kids, they can help you with laundry, do the dishes, tidy up the rooms, and many other tasks that’s appropriate for their age. 

You little ones can also help you by placing the toys back in the toybox.  Your spouse or significant other can help you with cleaning, spending time with the kids, preparing meals, help the kids with homework.  You’ll be amazed how much free time you’ll be able to get once everyone starts helping you out.




 

Enjoy It

Motherhood is a gift. Enjoy every bit of it. Don’t panic about all the things you have to do.  Take a deep breath and relax.

Don’t be afraid to say no.  Don’t agree to all tasks.  If there are certain things you know you don’t have time for, don’t sign up for that.  You know how much you can handle without being overworked, overtired and over-stressed.

Don’t let small things get to your mind which can impact your emotionally and physically.  Cherish the moment you spend with your family.




Conclusion

The goal here is for you to have your own free time so that you can spend on things that you’ve always wanted to do.  It can be anything from hobby to relaxing.  Work with strategies that’s applicable to your situation.
